Former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away last night at the age of 92. Whatever one may think about the Bush family’s moderate politics, family was always at the center of their lives. George H.W. and Barbara Bush were married for 73 years and raised six children together.
During a commencement speech at Wellesley College in 1990, Barbara Bush encouraged the graduates to pursue their dreams, but to always keep family first. She said:
“At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a child, a friend or a parent. . . Your success as a family, our success as a society, depends not on what happens in the White House, but on what happens inside your house.”
Not only was Barbara Bush a devoted mother, she was a dedicated public servant. Over the past 25 years, Barbara and George H.W. Bush raised more than $1 billion for various charities.
